The Story of Two Chairs

Actually, this isn't one of them but it sits in my hall and I think it's so pretty
that I wanted to show it to you.

I embroidered the tapestry seat cover for my mother quite a few years ago.

I have done a lot of tapestry work for her over the years...
more chair seats, cushions, pictures etc.

In fact I would often be making something for myself and a birthday or something would be coming up and she loves tapestry so much...
I would give it to her!

When she was staying last year she said that she had
told my brother
I was to have anything tapestry after her days as I had worked it.

I never expected that!!

Nor did I expect her to bring this chair and say that I may as well have it now!

I do hope that she is enjoying my enjoyment of
owning it now while she's alive to see it!

***********

I digress..the purpose of this blog was to share with -you a rainy...very rainy
Bank Holiday Monday morning.

I was on my computer......
scanning in pictures of my voluntary work in India

(I may share with you sometime -  if you'd like?)

.....when I heard this appalling noise...

I investigated..

and found................

Chair One

He had decided that his favourite chair was difficult to get out of and......
he was going to do something about it!

He also decided to put wheels on it so that I could get it out to clean under it.
Very thoughtful!!

Finished article!

Proof of the pudding......

Notice the abandoned tools!

Chair two

I asked V to buy me
a secretarial chair so  that I could sit comfortably at the kitchen table.

He had one for himself a while ago and it's so handy for turning around to the cupboards....
and to be able to adjust it's height

More comfy too!

He told me he had one in the shed where he does his wood work but it was covered in wood dust.

***************
The story behind the chair is that
V saw it at a car boot sale and liked it.
He was talking to my daughter's father in law at the time who said he liked it as well.  He walked away and V bought it!

Apparently daughter's in law saw it sitting proudly on top of the landrover as V drove home and muttered
'I hope it rains!'

************************

So V brought it in this morning ... having brushed off most of the excess dust.

I have vacuumed it, brushed it and scrubbed it with a toothbrush and small scrubbing brush

It's very comfy

I would like to cover it but need some ideas.

I imagine the seat could be done with a cover with ties?

The back....should it have a cover that goes over the top and covers it completely...if so..
how do I do it??

There's a wealth of tremendous talent out there to try and tap into......

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

  1. I covered a chair very similar to that last one. I made a "pattern" of sorts. The back of my chair was not cloth-it was a hardened material of some sort. I made something that looked almost like a shower cape...Cut slightly larger than the front with about a 3" overlap in the back. Made a casing around the edge and threaded some heavy duty elastic through it..stitched the ends together and it slipped over and head as snug as anything. I actually did the same thing with the seat portion of my chair, too.

I love the first chair with the seat you made. How fun that you now have it back...with a chair included! xo Diana

  2. Hi there, I'm not creative in this area but I think a really fun print would jazz it up-maybe polka dots or zebra stripes-something really crazy. That way you wouldn't have to have clothes made out of such a zany fabric would it would make you smile.

  3. A vote for a crocheted cover in lots of bright colours! I think the elasticated covers mentioned above are an excellent idea......

V sounds very practical that he's thought ahead for your cleaning needs! He does look rather high up now and looks like he can't quite reach the floor!

  4. I was going to suggest tie type cover for the seat and a slip over as Diana had suggested, these chairs look really nice covered and I was wondering does the other chair scoot off when he exits lol with the wheels ?just had a funny pic in my mind that's all.

  6. Hi, thank you for visiting, and for your comment. I thought that the followers thingy on my blog is at the very bottom of the page, after the posts and just before 'some nice places to visit'. I am getting confused though, and don't really understand how this works, and about feeds, etc.! Am I right about the followers, or do I need sorting out? If so, would you like to volunteer?!!!

  7. Hi Joan... Thanks so much for your lovely comments on the Beautiful Blogger Blanket... so now you have a challenge.. learn to crochet ready to send me a square next year! Of course it would also be very useful to be able to crochet a cover for chair 2 as Faith suggested... you'd be amazed at just how versatile it is! I love your hubby's 'Heath-Robinson' style...but I think he needs a footstool now... I feel for him as my little legs are always dangling like that on normal chairs! Glad to have found you, Jill x

  12. Hi there! Oh those chairs...such fun stories! How wonderful of your Mom to let you have the chair now.
The black one...I would make a slip cover for the top part. Simply a three sided sort of pillow slip. And then you can cinch it at the bottom for some style with either a bow or some sort of decorative feature. You should be able to actually recover the seat with fabric and staple gun. Please share when you do it!!!!
